- Astronomy Colloquium
- X-Ray Binaries in the Early Universe
- Time: 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
- Place: 4421 Sterling Hall, Cookies and Coffee at 3:30 pm, Talk starts at 3:45 PM
- Speaker: Philip Kaaret, University of Iowa
- Abstract: The production of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) is significantly enhanced in galaxies with low metallicity and may have had an impact on the heating of the intergalactic medium in the early Universe. I review HMXBs with emphasis on ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). I then describe recent studies of HMXBs in nearby, low-metallicity galaxies that are local analogs to early galaxies and the implications for the epoch of reionization.
