Monday Science Seminar
Monday Science Seminar w/ Benjamin Rosenwasser (UW-Madison)
Time: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Place:
Speaker: Benjamin Rosenwasser, University of Wisconsin - Madison
Abstract: Over the past decade the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) has obtained high S/N FUV spectra of hundreds of distant QSOs, illuminating the gaseous structures that lie within the cosmic web at redshift < 1. Besides Lyman alpha forest absorption, the next most common type of absorber are low column density OVI absorbers, often appearing as apparent single components with one or two associated HI lines. Many studies have shown that the absorbers with large column densities are in the inner regions of galaxy halos, while the much more numerous single component OVI absorbers have not been the subject of much scrutiny. We have been studying a large sample of 600 OVI absorbers, and I will focus on our effort to characterize the galaxy environments of the common single component systems. We show that some appear to trace halos, but many are clearly isolated, and sometimes embedded within filamentary structure traced by nearby galaxies on Mpc scales. We discuss the possible origins and physical properties of the gas in this intra-filament medium.

New Physics and the Black Hole Mass Gap
Time: 2:00 pm
Place:
Speaker: Sam McDermott , Fermilab
Abstract: The LIGO/Virgo collaboration has recently announced the detection of GW190521: a heavy binary black hole merger with component masses in the "black hole mass gap," which cannot be explained by standard stellar structure theory. In this talk, I will discuss how new light particles that couple to the Standard Model can act as an additional source of energy loss in the cores of population-III stars, dramatically altering their evolution and potentially explaining GW190521. The black hole mass gap will emerge as a powerful tool for studying beyond the Standard Model particle physics.

Astronomy Colloquium
SPECIAL TIME 10 AM
Interstellar Shocks
Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Place: Zoom meeting(see Abstract ) SPECIAL TIME 10AM
Speaker: Antoine Gusdorf, Laboratoire de Physique de l’École Normale Supérieure & Paris Observatory, Paris, France
Abstract: The interstellar medium is an out-of-equilibrium medium, where energy is constantly injected in various forms: mechanical energy, photons, or cosmic rays. The propagation of shock waves is ubiquitous in the interstellar medium, where it represents an important part of the mechanical energy input. For instance, interstellar shocks are generated by the birth (jets and bipolar outflows), life (stellar winds) or death (supernova and supernova remnants) of certain stars, or by the formation of molecular clouds (converging flows). In this talk, I propose to review the progresses in our knowledge of the propagation of shocks in the interstellar medium. These progresses have been made possible by more and more efficient telescopes in various wavelengths (Spitzer, Herschel, SOFIA, ALMA, NOEMA, APEX, the IRAM-30m telescope…), and also by the developments of sophisticated models. I will illustrate how observations of various species has progressively led us to include non-stationarity effects, new geometries, and new physical and chemical processes in shock models to better address the classical questions related to the propagation of shocks: What kind of chemistry is operating in shocked regions, and hence what is their contribution to the cycle of matter in the Galaxy ? What is the energetic impact and feedback of shocks on their local environment ? What is their contribution to the energetic balance of galaxies ? What can shock tell us about scenarios of star formation ?

Women+ in Plasma Physics (W+iPP)
Time: 12:00 pm
Place: Zoom
Abstract: Women+ in Plasma Physics (W+iPP) will be having our first meeting this Friday, February 5th at 12 PM. If you are interested in learning more about the group, getting involved, or sharing your ideas with us, please join us for the meeting using the Zoom info below! You can also contact Carolyn Schaefer (email: cschaefer6@wisc.edu) with any questions, etc.

W+iPP is a new group here at UW-Madison whose mission is to foster a community that supports and promotes women and gender minorities in plasma physics, both here on campus and in the plasma physics field as a whole. We also aim to share our passion for plasma physics with younger women+ in STEM through educational outreach. Our group is supported by the Engineering Physics department, but we are open to any graduate or undergraduate student, faculty member, postdoctoral researcher, or scientist who identifies as a woman, a gender minority, or an ally of women and gender minorities in plasma physics.

Phenomenological and Quantum Gravity constraints from Charged Black Hole Evaporation in de Sitter Space
Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Place: For zoom link, sign up at:
Speaker: Gerben Venken, Heidelberg University
Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss the decay of charged black holes in de Sitter space. We will establish how black hole mass and charge change over time due to both Hawking radiation and Schwinger pair production as a function of the masses and charges of the elementary particles in the theory. By demanding that black holes decay 'sensibly', one can constrain the spectrum of allowed particles in a theory in an interesting way. This fits into the larger picture of the Swampland program of constraining effective field theories by demanding they can be completed into consistent quantum gravity theories. We will find a lower bound on the mass of charged particles by demanding that large charged black holes evaporate back to empty de Sitter space, in accordance with the thermal picture of the de Sitter static patch. This bound is satisfied by the charged spectrum of the Standard Model. This bound has phenomenological implications for the cosmological hierarchy problem and inflation. The bound has a nice interplay with other constraints obtained in the swampland program. The bound can be applied to argue against the consistency of certain de Sitter supergravity models. There has been much discussion about the consistency of de Sitter vacua in string theory and quantum gravity. Interestingly, proposed string theory constructions of de Sitter vacua involving uplifting warped throats such as KKLT and LVS seem at present to satisfy both our bound and the weak gravity conjecture.
