Graduate Program Event
Electron-electron interactions in Si/SiGe Quantum Dots
Time: 2:00 pm
Place:
Speaker: Ekmel Ercan, Physics PhD Graduate Student
Abstract: In this talk I present our work on the effects of confinement strength on two-electron states in an electrostatically-defined quantum dot in a Si/SiGe quantum well at zero magnetic field, focusing on geometries appropriate for qubits. I will discuss that the experimental signatures of strong electron-electron (e-e) interactions in these devices can be subtle. While the suppression of the singlet-triplet splitting in two-electron quantum dots formed in direct band gap materials is a clear indication of e-e interactions, in silicon devices this effect can be masked by the additional valley degree of freedom of the conduction band electrons, when the quantum well interface is flat. I will further argue that interfacial-disorder-induced valley-orbit coupling, on the other hand, can induce this suppression. Next, I will discuss implications of this physics on charge noise sensitivity and demonstrate calculations indicating that dramatic changes in dephasing times can be observed by slightly changing the confinement strength. Finally, I will discuss the role of e-e interactions in two recent experiments demonstrating (1) the use of valley-orbit states to probe Si/SiGe interface, and (2) a spectroscopically-dense set of low-lying energy levels.

Physics ∩ ML Seminar
Generative and Invertible Networks for the LHC
Time: 11:00 am - 12:15 pm
Place: Online Seminar: Please sign up for our mailing list at www.physicsmeetsml.org for zoom link
Speaker: Tilman Plehn, Heidelberg University
Abstract: LHC physics is a unique field in the sense that we compare vast and highly complex data sets with precise first-principles predictions. These predictions usually rely on Monte Carlo simulations. I will show how generative neural networks can supplement these simulations and discuss conceptional advantages of this method. I will then explain how generative networks can invert event simulations. Flow-based invertible networks allow us to invert or unfold individual detector simulations of QCD parton showers in a mathemacially consistent manner. That means that they predict calibrated probability distributions in parton-level phase space for individual observed events. Finally, I will illustrate how the same networks can infer the structure of QCD splittings forming jets.

Cosmology Journal Club
Time: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Abstract: Cosmology Journal Club is back! We will be having virtual meetings this semester.

Each week, we start with a couple scheduled 15 minute talks about one's research, or an arXiv paper. The last 30 minutes will typically be open to the group for anyone to discuss an arXiv paper.

All are welcome and all fields of cosmology are appropriate.

Contact Ross Cawthon, cawthon@wisc, for more information.

Astronomy Colloquium
A Collage of Exoplanets on the Mass-Period Diagram
Time: 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Place: Zoom meeting (see Abstract ) Coffee and tea 3:30 pm, Talk 3:45 PM
Speaker: Ji Wang, Ohio State
Abstract: I will talk about different populations of exoplanets and their interconnection. Specifically, I will present chemical composition measurements for hot Jupiters and directly-imaged young jovian planets, in an attempt to answer questions such as how stellar chemical composition controls the planet formation; how the difference of planetary and stellar chemical abundance reveals the history of orbital migration. In addition, I will highlight the recent progress in comparative planetology by contrasting (1) small planets with different densities and structures; and (2) Earth-size rocky planets vs. gas dwarf planets in the habitable zone. These comparative studies shed light on the origin of the diverse outcome of planet formation and the search for biosignatures with current and future facilities.

Theory Seminar (High Energy/Cosmology)
New Physics and the Black Hole Mass Gap
Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Place: For zoom link, sign up at:
Speaker: Djuna Croon, TRIUMF
Abstract: In this talk I will demonstrate the potential of the black hole mass gap to probe new physics. The mass gap, in which no black holes can be formed, is a standard prediction of stellar structure theory. I will show that physics beyond the Standard Model may dramatically alter the late stages of stellar evolution, when it acts as an additional source of energy (loss) or modifies its equation of state. This results in variations in black hole populations, most prominently observable through shifts of the mass gap. The gravitational wave observations by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration will bring the edges of the black hole mass gap in sight in the coming years, making this an interesting novel probe of new physics.
